This Interactive Learning WebApp represents a new approach to teaching research methodology — one that embraces interactivity, recognises disciplinary diversity, and guides you from philosophical first principles through to designing your own research project.
Why this WebApp exists
Research methods courses often present methodology as a set of techniques to be learned in isolation from the philosophical assumptions that give them meaning. Students learn how to conduct interviews or run statistical tests, but not why these methods work differently depending on the paradigm from which they’re approached. The result is frequently a kind of methodological confusion — designs that lack internal coherence, methods that don’t fit questions, and quality criteria borrowed from inappropriate paradigms.
This WebApp takes a different approach. It begins with the philosophical foundations that underpin all research — ontology, epistemology, and the paradigms that bring them together. It then builds systematically through research design, methods, analysis, and ethics, showing how each element must align with what comes before and after. Throughout, the emphasis is on coherence: the logical consistency that distinguishes rigorous research from methodological muddle.
What makes this WebApp different
Three features distinguish it from traditional research methods texts:
First, it is genuinely interactive. Rather than simply presenting information, each chapter includes interactive exercises, quizzes, and tools that help you actively engage with the material. The Project Designer in Chapter 8 allows you to build, save, compare, and export multiple versions of your research design. The Reflections Diary supports ongoing reflexive practice throughout your research journey.
Second, it is multi-disciplinary. Research methods are taught differently across disciplines, yet many share common foundations. This WebApp covers eight disciplines — Education, Psychology, Human Geography, International Development, Politics & Justice, Health & Nursing, Sociology, and Social Work — showing both what unites them methodologically and where their traditions diverge. You’ll find examples and considerations relevant to your field alongside exposure to approaches from cognate disciplines.
Third, it prioritises paradigmatic coherence. Every chapter connects back to the philosophical foundations established at the start. When you choose a method, you’ll understand which paradigms it fits. When you evaluate quality, you’ll use criteria appropriate to your approach. When you reflect on ethics, you’ll see how your paradigmatic stance shapes what ethical practice looks like. This is not a cookbook of techniques but a guide to thinking methodologically.
How it’s structured
The WebApp can be read in order, from Chapter 1 to Chapter 8, building your understanding systematically. Alternatively, you can navigate to specific chapters as needed — though if you find yourself confused about why a particular approach matters, the answer usually lies in the earlier philosophical chapters.
The interactive elements work best when you engage with them actively. Don’t just read about research design — use the Project Designer to sketch your own. Don’t just learn about reflexivity — use the Reflections Diary to examine your own position. The tools are designed to support real research projects, not just exam preparation.
Chapter 8 brings everything together. It includes a comprehensive glossary of key terms, a bibliography for further reading, and practical tools for designing your research. Think of it as both a culmination and a reference point — somewhere to return as your project develops.

This Interactive Learning WebApp emerged from years of teaching postgraduate research methods at the University of Manchester. I am grateful to the many students whose questions, confusions, and insights have shaped how I understand methodology and how I try to teach it.
